Minutes of the January 16, 2012 Board Meeting

MEMBERS PRESENT: Ellie Edwards, Arlene White, Carolyn Demorest, Linda Gawrelski, Ginny Bacik, Dolores Durbas, Alice Razzano, Linda Surprise, Clif Bridgers, Betsy Young

MEMBERS ABSENT: Elaine Michitsch

Meeting called to order at 1:30pm by President Ginny Bacik.

MINUTES: Minutes from the last board meeting of September 8, 2011 were approved upon a motion by Arlene seconded by Ellie with the correction of the spelling of “Waccamaw.” Betsy will forward the minutes to the board members for review, and Dolores will post them to the blog once approved.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Elaine sent her reports and Ginny passed around the P & L for 2011 – Income $15124.98, expenses $26939.99, for a net of ($11207.85). This was expected, as we paid for several items when the library re-opened last spring. Our account balance as of 12/31/11 was $6901.25. The Sales tax refund is expected to be approximately $1000.00. The report was accepted on a motion by Betsy and seconded by Linda Surprise.

Ginny stated that we need 3 people to audit the books. Ellie suggested that they be new board members to help them get acquainted with our activities. Dolores, Linda G., and Carol will do the audit. Ginny will ask Elaine to call them to set up a date and time, hopefully within the next 2 weeks.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Ginny advised that she has met with Ellie, Dolores, Arlene, and Lisa to familiarize herself with her responsibilities. She has also received copies of minutes for last year’s meetings. She stated that Lisa needs volunteers on Saturdays. Linda G. will meet with Lisa to set a process for obtaining qualified library volunteers, including Saturdays.

OLD BUSINESS: Security cameras: Lisa says she does see a need for security cameras. Ginny has been unable to contact Ronnie, who has promised to look into the matter. Ginny will keep trying.

DVD cleaner: Lisa is still interested in one but she hasn’t settled on a model. On a motion by Dolores and seconded by Linda G. the board allocated up to $2000 to purchase a DVD cleaner. Ginny will notify Lisa that the money is available.

Tree and bush removal: Ginny will discuss it with Ronnie when she reaches him.

E-reader: Per Lisa, if obtaining e-book downloading capability is approved by the county board, it will be county-wide, not just for the Leland branch library. Residents are anxious to get it. There has been no decision yet.

New county libraries: Ginny needs to talk to Ronnie about this.

NEW BUSINESS: Need for by-laws review/ frequency of meetings: Ginny has a copy of by-laws dated 5/19/08. Betsy will locate an e-copy of it or a later date (if available) and forward it to the board for review and discussion at the next meeting. Current by-laws call for general meetings in February, June, and November of each year and board meetings each January, March, May, and September. Betsy mentioned that at the time of the latest review, we were holding book sales once or twice a year only and meetings were scheduled to facilitate information and activity regarding those sales.

Other: Arlene mentioned that we applied for and didn’t receive a grant for our library from Brunswick Electric in 2010. The application period this year is from January 15 through February 15. The application is located at www.bemc.org. Clif will look for last year’s grant application. Arlene is heading the effort to complete the grant and will be assisted by Ginny and Dolores.

COMMITTEE REPORTS: Magnolia House/Book Sale: Ellie informed the board that the 1/14/12 sale was the best ever – we made $1661.00. The publicity was excellent. Advertising Civil War books and highlighting a couple of authors worked well. February’s sale will highlight WWII books and works by John Grisham and Danielle Steel. She also stated that Lisa needs books covered, but there is no process in place to get/train volunteers to do this. Ginny will talk to Lisa about setting up a process. Lisa provides training for volunteers she has approved.

Neil Brooks of Leland Parks and Recreation, will contact Ellie regarding moving the Leland farmers’ market to the side of our yard – between the Magnolia House and the library. It may involve changing the dates of the farmer’s market to take advantage of the anticipated increased traffic.

Publicity: Dolores thanked Clif for correcting the blog layout. She has made personal contacts with the Brunswick Beacon and Encore and Ben Steelman of the Star News. She also spoke to “Living Out Loud” and is discussing a possible feature on our library in August. So far the Leland paper has not included any information she has sent them. Alice suggested contacting Jane Crowder, who may have influence. Both www.americantowns.com, and www.townplanner.com have free listings. She wants to ask customers at our book sales how they received information concerning the sale to help her make the best use of her publicity options. She will create a form which can be quickly used at upcoming sales. She is hoping for an article in the North Brunswick magazine as well.

The Newcomers’ meeting occurs the day before our book sales. She suggested doing a 5 minute blurb on the library and the Friends. Ginny will discuss it with Lisa. Alice asked if we have anything to include in the welcome bags handed out to new members at those meetings. Arlene will give Alice copies of the tri-fold and bookmark we have now and will look into the feasibility of additional material. Also, the bookmark needs to be revised to include the Friends of the Leland Library blog address.

Membership: Arlene reported that we now have 232 active members, with 45 unpaid for 2011. She collected 2012 dues from several board members.

Volunteers: Linda G. reported that Lisa prefers to vet volunteers herself. Linda will, however, be willing to schedule volunteers, as there appears to be no existing system to assure continuous help.

Motion to Adjourn was made by Betsy, seconded by Dolores. The meeting was adjourned at 3:26pm.

ACTION ITEMS:

1.         Betsy will e-mail the minutes to the board members, and Dolores will post them after adjustments on the blog.
2.         Ginny will ask Elaine to call Linda G, Dolores, and Carol to set the time for the audit.
3.         Linda G. will meet with Lisa to determine a process for obtaining qualified volunteers to work in the library.
4.         Ginny will contact Ronnie regarding the need for security cameras, tree and bush removal, and the status of additional county libraries.
5.         Ginny will notify Lisa that up to $2000 is available for purchase of a DVD cleaner.
6.         Betsy will forward an e-copy of the latest by-laws to the board members for their review and comments.
7.         BEMC grant – Clif will look for last year’s application. Arlene will work on the current application with assistance from Ginny and Dolores.
8.         Ginny will talk to Lisa about setting up a process to train volunteers for specific needs and do a 5-minute talk on the library and Friends at Newcomers meetings.
9.         Neil Brooks will contact Ellie regarding moving the farmers’ market closer to Village Road to combine it with our book sales.
10.       Dolores will create a form to be used at upcoming sales requesting how customers received information about the book sale.
11.       Arlene will give Alice existing copies of our tri-fold and bookmark to include in newcomers’ bags at their meetings. The bookmark will be edited to include our blog address.

January 14th - Second Saturday Book Sale – Civil War Books

The Friends of the Leland Library are pleased to announce their "Second Saturday" book sale to be held on January 14th at the Magnolia House, 485 Village Road, Leland, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The spotlight in January will focus on a large collection of Civil War books. In addition, we are also highlighting two fiction authors - W.E.B. Griffin and Robert B. Parker. Books authored by Griffin and Parker will be half price at 2 for $1.00.

We have a large donation of books - both fiction and non-fiction. There is an entire room set aside for children’s books and another for all other genre of books as well as CD’s and DVD’s. Our November book sale will be held on Saturday at the Magnolia House from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. This is a sale you don't want to miss!

Since the last sale, we have received huge donations of books - many in like-new condition. With Christmas just around the corner, the Magnolia House staff has provided lots of ideas for gift giving from cookbooks to stocking stuffers, Christmas fiction and non-fiction - there is something for everyone.

In addition, Ben Steelman from the Star News will be on hand to sign his book "Wilm on Film" - an excellent gift for the film buff in your life. As always, the sale will benefit our Leland Library and help provide items no longer covered by the Brunswick County budget.

"Second Saturday" book sale will be held this Saturday, October 8th

Our "Second Saturday" book sale will be held this Saturday, October 8th, at the Magnolia House. This month's highlight will be a book signing by Wilmington author Juliana Morgan, whose book "Zach's Tracks" will be featured. The book is the true story of a spunky little Yorkshire Terrier. Zach's Tracks is a character building journey for the whole family, and a must read for all dog lovers. Juliana will be reading excerpts from her book at 11:00 am. Come with your children and granchildren to hear and enjoy.

Juliana Morgan is a local author who enjoys writingchapter books for young readers. She has been a guest speaker in schools, for books clubs and otherorganizations, sharing her love for creating happy, character building familystories, and encouraging children to write.

The sale will also spotlight a Christmas theme with gift ideas and stocking stuffers. We've done some shopping for you and found some great ideas! It's never too early to get busy on that Christmas list!

As always, most hardback books are $1 each and paperbacks are .50 cents. Audio books on cassette tape and VHS tapes are specially priced and ready to go. As always the proceeds will benefit the Leland Library, so please come and support this worthy cause.

It's Christmas at the Second Saturday Book Sale!

Our Second Saturday book sale will take place this Saturday, September 10th at the Magnolia House from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Featured this month will be All Things Christmas. Weather permitting, a tent sale with items ranging from crafts to fiction and books on tape to videos will be offered - all with a Christmas theme.

In the past month we have received an amazing number of donations passed on to us by the library, including several boxes of boating/sailing books and we'll be displaying them as part of our tent sale. As always, most hardback books are $1.00 and paperbacks .50 cents. As you know, proceeds from the sale benefit the Leland Library and enable the purchase of items not covered by the Brunswick County budget.

Call for Nominations for FOL Board Candidates

Public Notice - All Are Welcome To Participate

The FOL Board will be meeting in September to, among other things, start assembling a slate of Officers for next year's FOL Board.

This is a call for nominations for candidates to serve on the Board of the Friends of the Leland Library for the Year 2011.
We are inviting you to share your time and expertise with the FOLL and the Community it serves.

This all volunteer board is seeking nominations for the following positions:

President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Corresponding Secretary
Book Sale Chairman
Volunteer Coordinator
Publicity Officer

Each position is open for nominations for persons to serve during the coming year (2012).

Please nominate yourself or others who would likely be willing to serve in the coming year. (see brief descriptions below)

FOLL Board Brief Position Descriptions:

While each position may demand more or less time from each individual, one can expect to commit to at least four, one-hour Board meetings a year, two General Membership Meetings of about two-hours each, plus committee and individual work needed to fulfill the duties of their respective office (plan about 2 to 5 hours a week maximum).

President - Responsible to overall management and direction of the FOLL's activities. The President has signing authority to commit the FOLL to obligations and activities in support of our mission to the Leland Public Library.
Vice-President - to serve in the absence of, in as replacement of the President should that person not be able to fulfill their responsibilities.
Secretary - Responsible for capture and accurate recording of FOLL meetings and formal activities of the FOLL and its Board.
Treasurer - Accounting, book-keeping, tax-reporting and management of all financial activities of the FOLL. Reports to the Board and is responsible for an annual audit of the books.
Book Sale Chairman - Responsible for organizing monthly FOLL Book Sales (currently being held at The Magnolia House). Works in coordination with the Volunteer Coordinator to have volunteers to fully staff the monthly book sales. Responsible for organizing, gathering and maintaining all book donations as received.

Corresponding Secretary - Responsible for collection, and management of membership information including issuing notices for renewal. Responsible for accurate maintenance of address and email distribution lists for active FOLL membership. Acts as the focal point for out-going communications to the membership from the Board.
Volunteer Coordinator - Responsible for identifying persons willing and able to assist in supporting the FOLL at both the FOLL's Magnolia House and in the Leland Library. Coordinates schedules, workload, responsibilities, and motivation of all FOLL Volunteers. Works in coordination with the Leland Library Staff and the FOLL Book Sale Manager.
Publicity Officer - Responsible for maintaining interest and awareness of the FOLL its activities, and goals for supporting Leland Public Library. Acts as official spokesperson for the FOLL when necessary in coordination with the Board. Responsible for activity engaging the at-large community via all media channels; mail, online (Twitter, Facebook, email, the FOLL Blog, Buzz, and other appropriate means). Responsible for generating and distributing News Releases about major FOLL events and activities to regional news and publicity organizations by the most effective, timely, means possible. Must be internet savvy.

Second Saturday Sale, Saturday, August 13th

The Book Sale staff has been busy sorting lots of books donated over the last month. You'll find more titles in every area from paperbacks to non-fiction and everything in between.   Remember, the money we make goes to help the library furnish whatever is needed that the County cannot provide due to budget restraints.

Books Donated to Boys & Girls Home

Arlene, Elaine, Lois Manning and Ellie pulled a large selection of books from the collections at Magnolia House and drove down to Boys & Girls Home of North Carolina at Lake Waccamaw. They met with Mr. Brown, the Principal of the school, and he was very grateful for the donation which will mostly be used in the school library. Some of the students helped unloading the books!

Books for the Troops!

After working at the Magnolia House today, The FOLL Sale Manager, Ellie & her husband Bruce drove over to Wilmington with a carload of hardback duplicates for the 9/11 Project. This is the first of several donations the FOL is making to the 9/11 Project by utilizing books that would otherwise go unsold at the regular FOLL book sales.

We've got lots more we can donate, and they even had two young strong backs to carry the books into the building! Ellie is assured by the volunteers at the 9/11 Project that the hardbacks will be distributed to families of deployed servicemen and women, and the paperbacks are mailed overseas to the troops.

A good cause to support and another way the FOLL is giving back to this community.

About: The Newport Girls
At the tender age of eleven, Elaine Colton moved to Newport, Rhode Island, to live with her Navy civilian engineer father. Life had already been difficult for Elaine, having lost her mother at an early age; she desperately needed a friend to stand by her side. Instead, she got not one, but fifteen friends who supported her from childhood through adulthood for the next fifty years. Warm, witty, and full of love, The Newport Girls chronicles Colton's extraordinary lifelong relationship with her closest girlfriends. Beginning in 1952, Colton relates meeting Leenie Callahan, a girl who lived across the street, and how the two soon became best friends. They expanded their friendship circle in high school to include other like-minded girls. Together, these friends modeled for the local department store, wrote columns for the school paper, and enjoyed their carefree high school years. Despite the girls' wide dispersal around the country following graduation, they never lost affection for each other. Through marriages, career changes, children, financial hardships, divorce, and even death, the bond these women maintained for so long continued to hold strong. NEWLY RENOVATED LELAND PUBLIC LIBRARY IS OFFICIALLY OPEN

The Leland Library had their Grand Re-Opening ceremony on Friday, June 3^rd, 2011 in their new reading room. After being closed for several months for the renovation, the community is excited and ready for one of our favorite and busiest places to be open and operating again.

Remarks were made by William M Sue, Chairman of the Brunswick County Commissioners, who was instrumental in obtaining the funding necessary for this remodel. Mr. Sue has been a supporter of our library for many years and continues to take pride in this accomplishment.

Brief comments were also made by Reecie Tate, Brunswick County Library Director, Lisa Milligan, Leland Library Manager, Clif Bridgers, President of the Friends of the Library and Debra Gill-Mason of the Brunswick County Literacy Council. Ron Benton and Lisa Milligan then cut the ribbon for the ‘official’ re-opening, after which patrons were given tours of the new facility.

If you haven’t already done so, take the time to visit our new library. It is beautiful and a tremendous asset to our community. The Friends of the Library Group work to continue support of the library’s programs and activities. If you are interested in helping, please stop by the library and ask where to sign up!

FOLL In The News: Monthly sales support Leland's library

The Leland Library has a wonderful friendship with its neighbor, the Magnolia House.
Operated by the Friends of the Leland Library, the Magnolia House helps support the library through its book sales held on the second Saturday of each month. The funds raised support the children's summer reading program and go to make purchases not paid for by Brunswick County.
This year marks the Magnolia House's one-year anniversary. The Friends will celebrate with a sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in the house at 485 Village Rd.
Before the Friends of the Leland Library had a permanent location at the Magnolia House, they had twice-yearly sales lasting three to four days at the community center. The volunteers would schlep books from a storage unit to the community center and then donate unsold books to nursing homes, schools or to Camp Lejeune.
"My dream was to have something permanent," said Ellie Edwards, Magnolia House manager.
Six rooms and a hallway house over 35,000 books, cassettes, VHS tapes, books-on-tape and CDs.
The flagship room is the children's room, decorated in an under-the-sea theme. A fishing pole and lure add an authentic touch to the cartoon-like sea creature images covering the dark blue walls.
"All the fish are very gentle," Edwards said with a laugh, referencing the smiling shark and the female octopus whose long eyelashes adorn bright eyes.
They have a special collections room outfitted with the classics, local authors and a theme table that offers books of a similar subject. The current theme is aviation.
All of the books on sale have been donated to the Friends. With a storage room full of unsorted bins, boxes and tubs, they are never in short supply of wares.
Every week, clad in their blue aprons, volunteers and members of the organization meet at the house to sort books. With everything from biographies to Westerns, Edwards said, they have something for everyone.
When open for sales, the Magnolia House gets all types of visitors. There are the repeat customers who come to check out what is new in cookbooks or popular fiction, and there are the new faces who are just discovering the house.
Young moms, children and older patrons all come to the house because they share a love of books and reading. The Friends and volunteers share that passion as well.
"We all do this because we just really love books," Edwards said.

In the last few months, when we have been holding weekly sales, it has been an invaluable process to keep the House in order. In an effort to continue to provide our customers with a unique shopping experience, we are distributing our Magnolia House Operations Manual.

Please review the attached Manual. It contains all of the information a volunteer needs to be able to contribute and maintain the standards that we feel have been implemented with our Book Sales.

Hello Fellow FOLL Volunteer,
I am sorry not to have gotten back to you sooner.

The new library space has taken some time to get used to and has required additional work prior to our ability assist. We are, however, love your eagerness to help get the Library re-opened and appreciate your patience while we coordinate with Lisa (Library Manager) one exactly what she needs and when she needs our help.

The library is open for help on Monday thru Friday 8:30 to 5:00. The following is a list of the things which need to be done at this time:

   •   Re-shelving books (sorting books already on the shelves in alphabetical order by author)
   •   small painting projects around the new facility
   •   tearing down storage boxes and taking them to re-cycle
   •   stamping new paperbacks with the library stamp headed for the racks
   •   what ever else Lisa asks the FOL to do as time progresses
    •    Please coordinate with Judy Pixler for assignments as they are made known to us

If you have volunteered at the library before, your experience is needed. If you have never volunteered inside the Library, please work with Judy for exactly what needs to be done.

Again, I apologize for the delay. I have been keeping a list with those who have volunteered to help. Any questions, please feel free to contact me. Lisa really does want our help but it is limited in what we can do.

Updated Book Sale Schedule - Second Saturday Sales

The last weekly book sale to benefit the Leland Library will take place on Saturday, April 30th from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Magnolia House. Your support of these weekly sales has been amazing and thanks to all of you, the Leland Library will have the furnishings necessary for them when they reopen in the near future.

Beginning in May, our book sales will be held on the second Saturday of each month from 10-2 p.m. From time to time, we'll be offering a special "Friends Preview" to thank you for your continuing support and we'll notify you by e-mail when we plan such an event.

Supporting the children's Summer Reading Program is another focus of our fund raising efforts. If you would like to contribute, please make your check payable to "The Friends of the Leland Library".

Construction Update

We talked with the construction manager earlier this week. While they were hoping to hand over the project to the Library at the start of this month, inspections and a few other items have taken longer than expected. Best projection is now to hand the Library back over to the County at the end of this month. From there, it will take about a month for the staff to re-install shelving and other fixtures, re-shelve the books from storage, and make ready for the Grand Re-Opening. They hope of have everything ready to go by the end of April. The Friends of Leland Library (FOLL) has agreed with Library Manager, Lisa Milligan, to host and manage the Grand Re-Opening. The FOLL will keep it's blog updated with information weekly and more frequently as we get closer to the opening.

As you know the Leland Library is now closed for renovations and probably won't open again until sometime in the Spring. To help get you through the long winter, the Magnolia House will be open for book sales every Saturday, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.

If you've never checked us out before, please come and see what we have to offer. Our books are 50 cents for paperbacks and $1 for hardbacks. We have lots of specialty items which can be purchased for Christmas gifts and our children's room is amazing. All proceeds from our sales benefit the library and their wish list is growing as the County budget shrinks! Leland Library Manager Addresses Closure of Facility

Lisa Milligan, Manger of the Leland Public Library addressed the fall meeting of the Friends of the Leland Library (FOLL) on Thursday November 4th. Ms. Milligan presented the current status of the Library construction project and plans for the Library during a planned closure period, and re-opening of the Library in 2011.

The meeting, attended by about 30 members and guests of the FOLL, gave Ms. Milligan the floor to present details of the Library's construction schedule. She also explained that she is truly appreciative of all the support and concern patrons of the Library have shown once it was known that there would be a temporary closure.

The temporary closure, she noted, is necessary for two reasons; the restrooms will be out of commission for renovation and as a public building they cannot be open without operating restroom facilities. Additionally, with some much construction happening on the interior of the building in the coming weeks, it is just not practical to have patrons inside during the time the interior is in such disarray. The expansion project "..will add nearly double the space we have now." according to Ms. Milligan. Once the project headed by Jessie & Meyer Construction was under roof, she said progress has been very fast. The interior walls are nearly all finished and, "...we are ordering carpet already for installation."

If the construction finishes ahead of schedule as hoped, the Library could re-open as early as March 2011. That will be determined by pace of the project and final approvals to re-occupy the building.

The FOLL, a separate, non-profit volunteer organization that supports the Library has committed to helping the Library and its patrons during the closure period and as they re-open next year. The FOLL is asking the community for their help, too. Prior to closing on the 10th of November, Lisa Milligan has the following needs:

    •    Boxes (an lots of them) to pack and store books and supplies during the closure
    •    Many helping hands to pack and move the contents of the library before and after the closing
    •    Packing supplies - packing tape, labels
    •    Funding donations for storage pods (this is an item not funded by the county)

Call the Library (910) 371-9442 to schedule your volunteer time or deliveries of support. You can help the Library service the community by giving your time and energy. If you choose to donate funds for the move, storage, and re-opening of the library, check can be mailed to the Library and made payable to the FOLL. 100% of funds go to the library support mission of the FOLL for projects like the move, books, supplies and equipment to provide service the county does not fund.

Expansion Project and Temporary Closure Topic of Mext Meeting

Lisa Milligan, the Leland Library Manager, is scheduled to be the Guest Speaker at the next meeting of the Friends of the Leland Library (FOLL).

The FOLL Meeting will be held in the "Boardroom" meeting room

at the Leland Best Western (Rt.17 at the WalMart Shopping Ctr)

The Meeting Starts Promptly at 7pm

The business portion of the meeting will include brief committee reports followed by a reading of the slate of candidates for the FOLL Board for 2011. Nominations are open to all and will be taken from the floor at the meeting. All persons interested in serving in this worthwhile organization are encouraged to self-nominate or nominate someone they feel will be willing to serve.

After discussion and closure of nominations, a vote will be taken to seat the new members of the Board. Their terms will be begin at the start of the new year.

After the business of the FOLL is completed at 7:30, the Guest Presentation will be made by Lisa Milligan.

Lisa is the current Manager of the Leland Public Library and is heading up the expansion project that will add new space for meetings, additional shelving, and computer space - nearly doubling the library's current capacity.

Ms. Milligan will discuss the current status of the project, schedules and anticipated reopening. She will be available for Q&A after her presentation.

Hi everyone.

There seems to be an overwhelming amount of misinformation about the library closing, to the point that patrons coming in the building are accusing the staff of spreading conflicting data. I work at the library and I can tell you the following:

1. The library is NOT closing on October 25th.
2. Books and items checked out DO NOT have to be returned by October 25th.
3. October 25th is the last day to CHECK OUT materials.
4. The library's exact closing date WILL BE ANNOUNCED as soon as we know it, but there is absolutely no way for us to know that right now.

We're doing our best to be clear about this, so please pass this to everyone you can to whom it's relevant.

The Library is requesting donations of empty boxes (18x18x18 or smaller) to assist them during the transition period of renovations.

Lisa Milligan, the Library Manager, has requested that boxes be dropped off at the Library so they can begin packing.

The boxes should be no larger than 18x18x18 (books are heavy), they should be clean, they should be broken down (flat) at that time of delivery.

This is a call for nominations for candidates to serve on the Board of the Friends of the Leland Library for the Year 2011.

This all volunteer board is seeking nominations for the following positions:

President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Corresponding Secretary
Book Sale Chairman
Volunteer Coordinator
Publicity Officer

We are inviting you to share your time and expertise with the FOLL and the Community it serves. Each position is open for nominations for persons to serve the coming year.

The FOLL General Meeting is scheduled to start promptly at 7pm on November 4th at the Best Western, Leland - Meeting in the "Boardroom" to the left off the main lobby. Coffee and Water will be served.

********************************* FOLL Board Brief Position Descriptions

While each position may demand more or less time from each individual, one can expect to commit to at least four, one-hour Board meetings a year, two General Membership Meetings of about two-hours each, plus committee and individual work needed to fulfill the duties of their respective office (plan about 2 to 5 hours a week maximum).

President - Responsible to overall management and direction of the FOLL's activities. The President has signing authority to commit the FOLL to obligations and activities in support of our mission to the Leland Public Library.
Vice-President - to serve in the absence of, in as replacement of the President should that person not be able to fulfill their responsibilities.
Secretary - Responsible for capture and accurate recording of FOLL meetings and formal activities of the FOLL and its Board.
Treasurer - Accounting, book-keeping, tax-reporting and management of all financial activities of the FOLL. Reports to the Board and is responsible for an annual audit of the books.
Corresponding Secretary - Responsible for collection, and management of membership information including issuing notices for renewal. Responsible for accurate maintenance of address and email distribution lists for active FOLL membership. Acts as the focal point for out-going communications to the membership from the Board.
Volunteer Coordinator - Responsible for identifying persons willing and able to assist in supporting the FOLL at both the FOLL's Magnolia House and in the Leland Library. Coordinates schedules, workload, responsibilities, and motivation of all FOLL Volunteers. Works in coordination with the Leland Library Staff and the FOLL Book Sale Manager.
Publicity Officer - Responsible for maintaining interest and awareness of the FOLL its activities, and goals for supporting Leland Public Library. Acts as official spokesperson for the FOLL when necessary in coordination with the Board. Responsible for activity engaging the at-large community via all media channels; mail, online (Twitter, Facebook, email, the FOLL Blog, Buzz, and other appropriate means). Responsible for generating and distributing News Releases about major FOLL events and activities to regional news and publicity organizations by the most effective, timely, means possible. Must be internet savvy.

Book Sale Chairman - Responsible for organizing monthly FOLL Book Sales (currently being held at The Magnolia House). Works in coordination with the Volunteer Coordinator to have volunteers to fully staff the monthly book sales. Responsible for organizing, gathering and maintaining all book donations as received.

25th of October is Last Day for Checking Out Books

October 25th is the last day patrons of the Leland Public Library will be able to check out materials from the Library until after the renovations are complete.

The 25th is also the last day to renew a book until after renovations.

The Library will remain open for returns and computer usage until the closing date is announced.

The Book Drop will remain open for returns.

Please make plans to return your books before the 25th of October to the front desk, or via the Book Drop.

This is the first step toward the temporary closing of Leland Public Library until the renovations are complete. The final date for closing will be announced soon.

The Library will be re-opened as soon as possible after completion of renovations.

Porch repaired after storm damage

The back porch of Magnolia House was damaged by a fallen tree branch during the last storm. Mike O'Driscoll from the construction company working on the library was kind enough to remove the large limb and repair the damage to the porch.

The crane was up and lifting trusses to install on the back addition to the library expansion.

Second Saturday Book Sale This Weekend!

What could be better than visiting Magnolia House on lovely fall Saturday and picking up some great books for reading at your leisure?     

The Book Sale staff has been busy sorting lots of books donated over the last month. You'll find more titles in every area from paperbacks to non-fiction and everything in between.     Remember, the money we make goes to help the library furnish whatever is needed that the County cannot provide due to budget restraints.

The Second Saturday of every month, the Friends of the Leland Library (FOLL) holds a used book sale to benefit the Leland Public Library. All books are 90% donated, priced from 10cents and up. Dealers are welcome. Proceeds from the sale are used to provide ongoing support for the Leland Public Library's services and programs.

This month the Second Saturday Sale will coincide with Leland's Founders Day Celebration. Please expect heavy traffic, crowds and parking will be restricted to areas within walking distance to Magnolia House. The Sale opens at 8am (instead of the usual 10am start) and will run until 2pm.

You may know this if you've ever dropped by Leland Public Library, but the Library is always busy! For a community like Leland, the Library play a big part in day-to-day life of area residents.

Just this past July, Leland Library issued two-hundred-and-one New (not re-issued) Library Cards! That's a lot of people taking advantage of the services offered. Existing library patrons checked out more than fourteen thousand books in July! That's almost 3 books per Leland resident per month!

Leland is way more than just lending books. Among other services, the library offers free computer access with internet to those patrons who sign up and reserve a time slot. With more than three thousand logins registered in July, it pays to reserve a time ahead of your arrival.

As always, the library staff is always happy to help you find the book you need. Keep up your support for the Leland Library. They are undergoing an expansion project right now that will give them more space to accommodate demand for their services. You can help them, too, by donating your time, cash or used books anytime the library is open. Just stop by the front desk and ask how to help through the Friends of the Leland Library.

Bricking the wall starts soon

The framing is all but done on the expansion project. The trusses and roofing will start soon. Next week, the bricklayers will start work, too. You can see the pallets of bricks are ready to go in these pictures taken by Bruce Edwards.

Computers Available For Public Use

Leland Public Library has had computers available for public use for a long time. In fact, about 80 people a day are using the nine internet-connected computers every day!

The computers are available on a first-come-first-served basis during regular library hours.

Most often, library patrons use the computers for general research, resume building, homework, and job searches.

Sign ups are available at the front desk.
